Tom Brady congratulates Jordan Spieth on his dramatic Open win
Jordan Spieth claimed his third major championship title Sunday by winning the Open Championship at Royal Birkdale in wire-to-wire fashion. Kuchar played Nos. 14-17 in 2 under but was two shots behind going down the 18th fairway, where he still “took a moment and thought, ‘This is an wonderful thing'”.
It could hardly have come at a better time after his nightmare at the 13th when he ended up dropping a shot after playing into brambles and havugn to hit his recovery off the driving range. Both golfers birdied hole 17, and Spieth’s par on 18 sealed the victory for the 24-year-old.
Jordan Spieth will take a three-shot lead into the final round of the British Open.
Jordan Spieth holds a three-shot lead over Matt Kuchar, with the final pairing due out at 2:30pm local time.
Spieth, who has won the Masters and U.S. Open, is trying for his first British Open title.
The world number four at one stage threatened to stage an incredible bid for the claret jug but a lost ball on the 15th derailed his charge. Surprisingly, Spieth finished the third round bogey free with five birdies.
Spieth said: “Thoughts were coming into my head, they creep in”.
After beating Rickie Fowler and Sergio Garcia by two strokes, McIlroy won his third major, having previously been victorious at the US Open and USPGA Championship.
Spieth responded with an immediate birdie after almost holing the par three 14th in one, then drained a monster 30-foot putt for an eagle at 15.
China’s Li Haotong was in the clubhouse two shots out of the lead after making birdies on the last four holes for a 7-under-63. His birdie putt, from no more than six feet, was forced through any break and right into the back of the cup. Now he has won the first three legs of a Grand Slam before the age of 24 the way Nicklaus did. Kuchar has yet to win a major championship.
Spieth has been at the top of the leaderboard after each of the first three rounds this week, but as he comes into the finale, memories are still fresh of his stunning collapse in the last round of the 2016 Masters.
After Kuchar made bogey on the next hole, Spieth had the same two-shot lead he started the day with.
The importance of a caddie’s role has perhaps never been more evident than at this year’s Open Championship.
From the moment he finally hit his approach to the 13th green, Spieth authored the latest chapter in his ever-growing legend. “He’s a great champion and he’s such a great person”, Spieth said of his rival, who had been given underdog backing from the Birkdale crowd. “I knew that another major win would be the one thing that would prove I’m capable of closing these majors out”.
