Tom Coughlin praises Eli Manning during farewell
12 years, two Super Bowl championships, and three consecutive losing seasons later, Tom Coughlin has resigned as head coach of the New York Giants.
The Giants endured another disappointing season, finishing 6-10 after Sunday’s 35-30 home defeat against the Philadeplhia Eagles.
Manning, who said that in the past he has made his feelings known to ownership, has not paid a visit to either John Mara or Steve Tish, the two men who will decide Coughlin’s fate. “I strongly believe the time is right for me and my family, and… the Giants organization”.
Former New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin, center, leaves a news conference after talking about stepping down as head coach of the team, Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2016, in East Rutherford, N.J.
Coughlin was named the head coach of the expansion Jacksonville Jaguars in 1995 and actually led them to the AFC Conference Championship in 1996, where they lost to his mentor Bill Parcells and friend Bill Belichick with the Patriots.
Tom Coughlin’s time as the head coach for the New York Giants is over. “One of the best guys I’ve played for”.
“I think this year I really had a firm grasp of the offense and what we were doing and on the same page, and I thought we did a good job”, Manning said.
“I appreciate the support of John and his family and Steve and his family, and of Jerry Reese and his staff. I think our organization is a great representation of what I mean when I talk about “team”.
Clearly the question was related to Saints coach Sean Payton (although no names were named), a former Giants offensive coordinator and prime candidate to replace Coughlin should the Saints be willing to let him walk for some light (second round?) compensation.
At 69, Coughlin was the oldest coach in the National Football League this season. “We say ‘next time.’ I’m trying to convey that here”.
“It was truly fulfilling to be the leader of those teams”, Coughlin said. When we lose, I lose.
Coughlin was wide receivers coach when the Giants won the Super Bowl in 1990. There was some speculation that both would be gone after a rough season in NY, but it now appears that Reese will keep his job for the time being.
The Giants aren’t in the playoffs and can not take away another Patriots Super Bowl victory. We had a couple of undefeated teams in here that we had a chance to win the game…
