Tom Coughlin Steps Down as Giants’ Head Coach
“I still believe he’s the right guy to turn this around”, Mara said. We’ve been friends a long time, and I’m sad, but I’m happy because it’s a new adventure.
Tom Coughlin has resigned from his role as head coach of the New York Giants.
The Giants sputtered to a 6-10 record and failed to win an NFC East that was wide open for the majority of the season.
Coughlin has a 170-150 career record, giving him the fifth-worst winning percentage among the 38 head coaches in National Football League history with 100 regular-season victories.
Speaking a day after stepping down following four straight years out of the playoffs, Coughlin called the Giants job a dream come true.
Coughlin came to the Giants in 2004 after Jim Fassel was sacked. It didn’t happen because the Giants lost six games either in the final 1:14 of regulation or in overtime. The Giants are actually the only team to defeat the Patriots in the Superbowl in the Tom Brady era, which is a stat in itself that Coughlin should be proud of. Coughlin’s Giants upset the previously unbeaten New England Patriots, 17-14. He also won a total of 8 playoff games and 3 division titles. In an interview with WFAN’s Mike Francesa on Monday afternoon, Manning raved about the coach he won two Super Bowls with.
In response to the news, co-owner Tisch said “On behalf of my family, I want to thank Coach Coughlin for how he has represented our franchise for the past 12 years”. “I take full responsibility for every player that’s been on this roster from the time I’ve been director of player personnel until right now, so I’ll take full responsibility-even though everybody’s involved with the grading players, and the players we take”.
ESPN tweeted on Black Monday, that Coughlin informed his coaching staff that the team was making a change at his position. And when the cameras caught of glimpse of Manning while Coughlin addressed him, the QB was visibly fighting back tears. “I feel that, we as players, we failed him by not playing to the level we could”. He’s a great example of how you should do your job. Along the journey, it’s been great with Coach as far as growing and learning each other and teaching me things, just how to be a man. “I think he has some good qualities”.
The Giants gave him 12 years to run one of the NFL’s flagship organizations.
“He thinks he’s the reason”, Coughlin said of Manning. When we lose, I lose. We had a couple of undefeated teams in here that we had a chance to win the game…
But Manning was cognizant that McAdoo might not be the new head coach and that a new one is likely to bring in a new offensive system and a new offensive coordinator.
Of that situation, Manning said: “Obviously would not be ideal”. “We have an obligation to teach these young men the lessons and life skills they need once their careers are over”.
