Tom Coughlin To Retire As Giants Coach, Invited Family To Final Game

There were poignant moments, like the sight of Giants head coach Tom Coughlin’s children and grandchildren at MetLife Stadium clad in “Coughlin Crew” sweatshirts, a touching show of support for the embattled family patriarch.

Speaking after the loss, which sealed the Giants’ second consecutive 6-10 season, Coughlin refused to address the possibility that the organization is ready to move on without him. The 69-year-old’s future is in doubt after missing the playoffs for four straight seasons.

That level of preparation helped Baker catch a touchdown pass in Super Bowl XXV and it would help the Giants capture two Super Bowls with Coughlin as their head coach.

More pertinent, perhaps, heading into Week 17, would be the victor of the Philadelphia Eagles at New York Giants game. Giants ownership is scheduled to meet Monday morning to discuss Coughlin’s future and other matters relevant to the team’s future. Special teams is an area of weakness for the Giants, giving up 103.4 return yards per game. I’m sure everyone feels like they let that person down. But he’s had three straight losing seasons and missed the playoffs in six of his past seven, which means a change isn’t a ridiculous idea no matter how decorated his résumé is.

Interim head coach and offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur is expected to interview for the Philadelphia Eagles’ head coaching vacancy.

“I’m not going to answer anything about that”, he said. “I think Shurmur’s a great coach”.
