Tom Cruise to star in The Mummy reboot?
With Dracula Untold proving to be a bit of a flop, it’s thought that The Mummy will be responsible for launching the world with is being overseen by Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan.
That potential unlikely marriage of mega-star and monster movie comes via a report from Variety, which says that Cruise is now negotiating to take a lead role in the reboot.
Relaunching “The Mummy” is the first step in Universal’s grand plan to create a cinematic universe featuring all of their classic monsters.
What do you think of Cruise shuffling into Universal’s monsterverse? The idea is to create movies based around each monster and have them start to interweave in a way that culminates in a big Avengers-style film.
Jon Spaihts is penning the script. It’s set in present day, unlike the most recent iterations, and is rumored to star some type of military man who gets wrapped up, pun intended, with the mythic monster. Tom Cruise was mulling offers for multiple roles, including the Shining prequel Overlook Hotel, before sparking to The Mummy and the Universal Monsters Universe from Celebrity Insider website.
There are few people with the acting chops, star power and pop cultural appeal to fill Brendan Fraser’s shoes in a reboot of The Mummy.
The Mummy is set to open in theaters on March 24, 2017.
Cruise most recently appeared in the summer hit Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, and his upcoming films include the cartel thriller Mena and the sequel Jack Reacher: Never Go Back.
