Tom Herman Introduced as New Texas Longhorns Football Head Coach
According to the terms of his Houston contract, Herman owes his previous employer $2.5 million if he leaves UH before February 28, 2017.
And the quick search was by design.
The former five-star quarterback is set to become a graduate transfer after sitting out the 2016 season at Houston, according to a report from Alex Dunlap of Orangebloods. “But, now we are home and I can not wait to get started”. Herman getting big bucks and a chance to lead one of the most historic programs in college football history.
Texas football is undoubtedly a pressure cooker, drawing constant attention throughout the nation.
“When we got Strong he had done something unbelievable at Louisville”. Herman also coached at Texas State where he was an offensive coordinator in 2005 when they made it to the Division 1-AA semifinals. The two linchpins of Herman’s off-field staff Houston – strength coach Yancy McKnight and director of football operations Fernando Lovo – will be joining him there. “I think for the university it’s going to be a challenge but we’ll overcome like we have throughout the years”, said student Omar Coronado. “When you look at the pedigree of someone’s training, the discipline they bring to the practice of their craft, and the discussions I had with Tom about all of that, I was convinced that he could do the job, and I remain so convinced”.
And that’s all before Herman blows his whistle at the first practice. They know how important a win would be for Strong and for his senior class clinching a bowl bid. Fans ABC13 spoke with say recruiting is their big concern.
Just hours after Strong’s statement, Herman issued his own through UT.
“It takes no talent to be physically and mentally tough”.
LSU athletic director Joe Alleva’s decision came two days after the No. 25 Tigers defeated No. 22 Texas A&M 54-39.
Herman is in just his second season as a head coach. Hiring Herman gives them a coach with well-established Texas ties and a coach whose staff has been actively recruiting the state and region for the past two cycles. And he’s learned from the very best, whether it’s Brown or Urban Meyer at Ohio State or anywhere in between.
The way Meyer describes it, an aligned team understands and is fully committed to the same culture, strategy and goal.
On the defensive line, the Longhorns have a pair of pass-rushing future stars, Malcolm Roach and Breckyn Hager, among their seven returning players who have started games. “By attack, we’ve got to make sure that we have the upperclassmen believing in our plan and our way of doing things”.
All of that came under different campus leadership than Herman has now.
“He was a real go-getter”, Clark said, “everyone could tell when he was here”. “He added energy into this program”, Mascorro said.
“The player-coach relationship is built on earned trust”.
“I mean I was pretty happy about it”. This is a gut feeling only as there are rumors out there that Allen wants to follow through on his wish to play for Herman since his transfer from A&M to the Cougars.
Expect Herman to try making his mark early as he undertakes the biggest reclamation project of his career.
Herman met with Fenves and Perrin overnight Friday and was “very impressed with their unified vision and commitment to football”. Contrarily, Strong’s team did not appear to show any improvement after three seasons. “The thing is, we’ve been building it for three years”.
He ended his post by directly speaking to his players. We’re prepared for this job. “We are prepared to be successful”. We’re prepared for adversity in this job.
