Tom Herman to remain coach of the Houston Cougars
To the University of Houston, for the football program and the school, head coach Tom Herman has changed the school’s culture across the board. Both Sensible & Herman are among the many direct group in that USC is contemplating to fill the opening created by Steve Spurrier’s midseason resignation.
Herman was one of the popular candidates rumored to be in the mix for several coaching vacancies in the SEC, including UGA, Missouri and SC.
At his weekly news conference, Herman said details of the contract still need to be worked out, but he and the Cougars “are moving in the right directions on the generalities” of a deal. “That’s probably all I’m going to say about it”.
Herman’s current contract pays him slightly less than $1.5 million a year.
Herman guided Houston to an 11-1 record in his first year as a head coach after serving as offensive coordinator for national champion Ohio State. The Houston board approved a new $3 million per year offer for Herman that was meant to make it “hard for him” to leave the Cougars earlier this month.
The Cougars will play for the conference championship title against Temple (10-2) on Saturday at noon EST.
