Tom Welling: Playing Superman on ‘Supergirl’ would be ‘odd’
CBS’ Supergirl has understandably kept its distance from an actual Superman appearance, both for in-story purposes and the character’s cinematic exploits, but would a familiar face help?
Henry Cavill is now making his mark as Superman in DC’s big budget superhero movies, but the previous incarnation of the character could be found on the small screen.
The question was posed by Buzzfeed’s Jarret Wieselman when he talked to the actor, according to The Wrap. But we’ve never seen him. Welling played Clark Kent, aka Superman, on The WB/CW drama Smallville, but said he’s lost sight of the character. “But I will tell you that no one has ever asked me to do it. So, I don’t know”. Welling played Clark in Smallville from 2001 to 2011, where the series followed Clarks younger years as he used his powers and met his familiar allies and enemies. The Supergirl show already featured former Lois and Clark Superman, Dean Cain, as well as former Supergirl, Helen Slater, from the 1984 film. So if the writers really want to include Welling somehow, theyll find a way. “It’s a compliment”, he said.
“I’m very proud of shows like Arrow (and) The Flash”. I don’t know who [Clark] is at that point. One thing Welling would have to go on – as he put it – “He would obviously be Superman”. There may yet be a part for Welling, but reprising Clark will likely continue to be an odd idea to the actor until it actually happens. Supergirl is now in its first season on CBS, with episodes continuing to air on Monday evenings at 8/7c.
