Tony Bellew makes easy work of David Haye in all-British rematch
Tony Bellew pounded out a decisive conclusion to his feud with David Haye, sending his British heavyweight rival to the canvas three times on the way to a dominant fifth-round win in London.
“I’ll have to review the tapes and review what went wrong”. In the closing seconds of the third round he dropped Haye twice and would proceed to take over from there.
With his boxing future at stake, a smiling Haye sauntered to the ring with no sign of apprehension, and donned headphones while Bellew marched through the crowd to his “Z-Cars” entrance theme. Rising unsteadily it appeared that Haye’s legs had gone from underneath him. Bellew then trapped Haye into a corner where he unleashed a flurry of punches which forced the referee to step in and put a halt to the contest, awarding Bellew the victory and putting an end to the rivalry. “I didn’t feel that great in there tonight”. In this round, Bellew took the fight to Haye, who was backing away and really looking in a world of trouble.
“David Haye is an awesome fighter”, he said in spite of their previous bad blood.
David again showed heart and desire to fight on, got up and attempted to do so before being pinned back on the ropes by Bellew. It wasn’t long before Haye looked in trouble physically however, fighting off the front foot perhaps with his ruptured achilles from the first fight still troubling him.
The former WBC cruiserweight champion also has an eye on the World Boxing Super Series final between Oleksandr Usyk and Murat Gassiev, which will create an undisputed titleholder for the division.
Will this be the last time we see Bellew celebrating in the ring?
There was no sign of a Hayemaker in this one and instead it was Bellew who came forward and did the damage. In a select few countries – Germany, Austria and Switzerland – subscribers to (legal) online sport streaming platform DAZN can watch Haye vs Bellew at no additional cost.
Haye knows there was only one victor and admits it could have been an error signing up to the fight.
