Tony Smith: Warrington Wolves need to show ‘pride’ after defeat
Castleford coach Daryl Powell hailed Liam Finn after the stand-off bounced back from gifting Warrington a route back into the match to settle a Super 8s thriller at the Mend-A-Hose Jungle.
However, Finn had the final say – kicking the crucial point to send his side fourth – six points clear of Warrington, with Huddersfield facing Catalans Dragons on Friday.
Two tries in seven minutes from Myler and Penny, with one Chris Sandow goal, levelled the scores – only for Finn to pounce at the death.
“Obviously it’s a team game and our forwards really got to grips in that second half and smashed theirs to be honest”. We were getting carried away with trying to score to kill the game off, when we should have just tried to stay up there.
“We could have controlled the ball a bit better and been a bit smarter. I compounded the issue with my poor kick and they went down there and scored off it. That summed that period up”.
“We are looking to provide a performance that shows how highly motivated we are to create the momentum we need for the weekly challenges we face in the Super 8s”.
“We wanted to put things right and attitude-wise, I think we did that”.
Wolves’ equalising try came moments after Tigers’ scrum-half Gale had missed with a drop goal attempt himself – only ruled out by video referees James Child and Warren Turley. Finn admitted. “I was running back thinking it had gone over, but Galey said he’d missed it!”
Westwood will return to the Wolves side tonight having watched his teammates crash out of the Challenge Cup in the semi final and suffer a heavy defeat to Leeds Rhinos.
“But Huddersfield are a good team and they grind out result after result”. We owed Hull one – they’ve both embarrassed us this year – and did that so it’d be a great time to make amends for our loss last time around, too.
But they lost influential forward Ben Westwood to a two-match ban following a shoulder charge on Tigers’ Luke Gale that afternoon.
“Defensively they were putting people like Mickey Paea on their backsides which is where we want to be and where you should start the game really not waiting so long”.
“Nothing changes in terms of eagerness to perform well and win games”.
