Toomey, still wary of Trump, chides Cruz for RNC speech
Oklahoma Republicans say Texas Sen.
Palin insisted that Cruz’s refusal to endorse the Republican nominee will end his career.
But the aim of Cruz’s speech Wednesday was clear as day. Only Cruz, however, took his opposition to Trump to the convention stage.
Cruz did not back down from his non-endorsement on Thursday, saying that “I am not in the habit of supporting people who attack my wife and attack my father”. He also asked the Texas delegation not to write him in on the ballot in November. Trump nicknamed him, “Lyin’ Ted” and implied that Cruz’s father, Raphael, had a connection to President John F. Kennedy’s assassin, Lee Harvey Oswald.
Instead they got the opposite Wednesday night as Cruz’s defiance ripped apart their showcase of GOP unity moments before vice presidential nominee Mike Pence took the stage.
Marco Rubio – who I cheered on during the primaries as he called Trump a con artist – sent in a meek hostage video endorsing said con artist.
Commentators suggested the ill-timed spat might damage Cruz’s long-standing dream of becoming president.
The blatant sign of GOP disunity angered some GOP delegates, former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, the Trump campaign and members of the nominee’s family.
But the closest as Cruz came to saying he wanted Trump to win the White House was when he said: “I want to see the principles that our party believes in prevail in November”.
Cruz did congratulate Trump and later told people to “vote your conscience” in 2016. He endorsed Florida Sen.
“I think you misunderstood one paragraph that Ted Cruz – who is a superb orator – said”, Gingrich said.
Kay Quirk, a Cruz supporter from Alta, said she found no fault in the Texas senator’s speech while delegate Bob Vander Plaats of Grimes praised Cruz for delivering a “powerful message” about conservatism but is still on a “journey” toward embracing Trump similar to other Republicans. “People understand this. That’s why they came out in unprecedented numbers all across America and voted for Mr. Trump”.
The delegates responded with angry boos, and Cruz backer and former Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli escorted Heidi Cruz off the convention floor as she was heckled by Trump delegates.
But Trump said later on Twitter that Cruz’s lack of an endorsement was “no big deal”!
Republican candidates had pledged during the primary contests to support the party’s eventual nominee.
“He’s a chicken”, said Eugene Delgaudio, a delegate from Sterling, Virginia, who clucked like a chicken when asked about Cruz’s decision.
Someone yelled “this is politics!”
“If we’re not going to do that, why do we have elections?” Ted Cruz, R-Tex., addresses the delegates during the third day session of the Republican National Convention in Cleveland, Wednesday, July 20, 2016.
“In this election, there is only one candidate who will uphold the Constitution”, Gingrich said.
