If having a longer battery life is more important to you than using the Facebook app, why not uninstall it and use your browser if Facebook is needed?
Ari Grant, an engineer at Facebook, said the company had “found a few key issues” that meant its app was using up battery life, even when its ability to refresh in the background was disabled.
In another test performed by Guardian journalist Samuel Gibbs, the battery life of an Android phone was compared when the Facebook app was installed, and when it was deleted. The good news is that you can supposedly improve the battery life on your phone by 20% just by deleting one app. The bad news is that the app is Facebook – and what are you going to do, start reading magazines on the can again?
On their research, Russel’s team discovered that, on uninstalling Facebook and Facebook Messenger App, The remaining apps on the smartphone launched 15% faster. He reports that, over the course of a day his Huawei Nexus 6P had 20% more battery.
I left the Facebook Messenger app installed, but swapped the Facebook app for an app called Metal, which acts as a wrapper for Facebook’s mobile site. This was true on average for every day for the week tried.
The result was a 15% improvement in performance when the Facebook and Facebook Messenger apps had been removed.
Gibbs stated that while the app itself was not drawing an excessive amount of power, once uninstalled, the Android System and Android OS processes both showed significant decreases in battery demand. So while Facebook didn’t look like it was using that much power, it was actually just being displayed elsewhere in Android’s statistics.
“I think it had just become so bloated with features, things they kept adding to the main site that people wanted in the mobile apps also”, one Android fan posted to the discussion.
If you’re a heavy Facebook user, the mobile app can be seen as a welcome addition to your daily “work flow” to help keep tabs on all of your friends, acquaintances, and family members.
Alternatively, you can simply use Facebook within Chrome on an Android phone: recent updates have enabled notifications for actions, chats and other features from Facebook even in the background, meaning the experience is very similar to using an app.
