Top Issue for GOP Voters, Sideshow in Debate — National Security
During an interview set to air on CNN this Sunday, Obama spoke to host Fareed Zakira and defended his recent statement.
Overall, discussions of foreign policy and national security occupied less than one-third of the two-hour debate. “Is the president going to compare me to Charles Manson?”
The majority leader has said he wants senators to spend next month’s debate over the Iran deal planted in their seats – an unusual step underscoring the issue’s gravity.
“He was saying, ‘If it’s not this deal, it’s war.’ No it’s not. He loves to criticise America, apologise for us, criticise medieval Christians”, Jindal said.
Christie finished, “The hugs that I remember are the hugs that I gave to the families who lost their people on September 11…And those had nothing to do with politics”. “He said these are folks who are chanting ‘Death to America.’ He added that little phrase in there”. And he both honored the role of the Israel lobby in our politics and then defied it. “They’re not ready yet”.
He was also dismissive of claims that the U.S. could unilaterally walk away from the deal and preserve the status quo, when five other major world powers, China, Russia, Germany, Great Britain and France were all in support of the deal.
“Again, the president is misspeaking. Why does the president see this in such stark terms and why are those who oppose the deal either ignorant or untruthful?” “In this agreement, Iran is charged with bringing environmental samples to have the IAEA look at”.
Obama’s problem is that for many members of Congress, pressured by pro-Israel lobbying groups and suspicious of Iran, the question is closer. “I have zero faith that they’ll do that”.
“President Obama’s deal with Iran empowers one of our chief antagonists and the world’s most radical Islamist regime with a pathway to the bomb, missiles to deliver it, money to pay for it, and the means to acquire a new military arsenal”. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., announced he would vote to reject the deal.
Yoho expects many more Democrats to follow suit.
“What I said is absolutely true, factually”, Obama said. He delivered a powerful speech enumerating the virtues of the agreement.
Members of Congress are heading home for their summer break. The Iran vote will come soon after lawmakers return in September. [Appropriations Committee] Chairman Hal Rogers has asked for hearings on this.
“You don’t negotiate deals with your friends”.
Instead, he is already reaching over their heads to the American public and trying to convince the people that he is doing the right thing. About 100,000 US troops received at least flesh wounds in Iraq, with 33,000 injured badly enough to go to hospital.
