Top Performers From The Dolphins Week 14 Loss To The Giants
“The rest of them are playoff games for us”.
The Dolphins (5-8) are assured of extending their postseason drought to a franchise-record seven consecutive years. But if the Coughlin era is going to sputter to an end in the next three weeks, Monday night proved that the quarterback who came to the franchise with him 11 years ago – and the other Giants stars who have known no other N.F.L. coach but Coughlin – are planning to get up off the turf and go down fighting. But we come out and we get a one-yard gain and now it’s second and nine. “I make sure that it [losing] stings and it hurts because the minute you go numb to that, then you’re just a loser”, Campbell said. “I’ll be honest with you, I just want to win”. It motivates me. It’s not too much for me to handle. “To me, that’s how you get motivated to win because you get exhausted of losing and it stinks”.
For Beckham, Monday night against the Dolphins marked the beginning of playoff type of games as the Giants can not afford to give up any more wins. And after working his way into shape to play on Monday (he was listed as questionable), the same happened again.
For every salty win, it seems there are a couple tasteless losses to follow. There will be a new coach, obviously, and new assistants. He declined to speculate about his chances of keeping the job.
When asked about his future beyond this season Campbell said, “I’ll be honest with you, I just want to win”. “All I care about is San Diego”.
The Dolphins never trailed by more than a touchdown in their 31-24 loss to the Giants, but they attempted 41 passes compared to just 22 runs.
Campbell was highly critical of the team’s personal fouls.
Campbell said he believed Miller was hurt. “They’re totally inexcusable. There’s nothing that’s OK about that”.
“We’re going against a quarterback who’s phenomenal”, Beckham said after emulating Newton’s dab dance. That turned out to be the Dolphins’ last offensive play. Landry was worn down as Tannehill targeted Odell Beckham’s former roommate 18 times over the course of the evening. “I had a good feeling that he would”. “Running over there, I saw him at the last minute”.
In the third quarter, three plays after almost getting intercepted on a deep pass to wide receiver Kenny Stills, Tannehill went back to a similar play.
Norman has made a habit of shutting down premier pass catchers this season. The Giants had looked sluggish through the first half, but by the second half, their offense rolled behind Manning and the bruising running of Rashad Jennings.
“You find out who loves the game, because that’s what you’re playing for”, Campbell said.
Beckham caught seven passes for 166 yards and two second-half touchdowns on Monday night, despite suffering from a stomach bug that forced him to get two IVs at halftime. “This is a short week; we have Carolina coming in and we have to have a great week of preparation and see if we can play well and finish another game”.
“We didn’t get it done on the biggest stage of our season”, Landry said.
It’s possible Tom Coughlin’s face, which didn’t fare very well when the Giants and Packers squared off in that memorable NFC title game at Lambeau in arctic conditions, could be in for another rough evening at TCF.
The Giants have lost five games this season in which they squandered fourth-quarter leads, most recently eight days earlier at the Meadowlands against the New York Jets.
