Top running backs meet in No. 18 Stanford-Arizona game
The Baylor Bears lit up the scoreboard on Saturday, picking up a 63-35 victory over the Texas Tech Red Raiders at AT&T Stadium. Since, Baylor won such games by an average of 40 points, save for two against Texas Tech that were decided by less than 10 points.
Through five games, there’s simply no clearcut No. 1 or no obvious 1-2 as in the past few years. Texas Tech opened Big 12 play last week by hosting TCU. Texas Tech tried a Hail Mary from their own 30 but it was incomplete.
Texas Tech has been a pleasant surprise this season, with a win over Arkansas and a close loss to TCU. Baylor is ranked No. 4; TCU was ranked No. 3. The Horned Frogs are now the fifth highest scoring team in FBS at 51 points per game.
When all was said and done, they had compiled 680 total yards. Duke, which NU beat on the road in Week 3, is now 4-1.
For the first time since Robert Griffin III, the Bears have a quarterback who can be used as a part of the running game.
Texas Tech is outscoring teams 54-36 this season. Instead, the balanced Bears left the Red Raiders behind in a hurry.
Twenty-eight points and 333 yards of offense – in the first quarter. The Red Raiders are #4 in both total and passing offense. Stanford ranks second in rushing defense and total defense. The most-troubling factor is penalties – 114 yards per game. Texas Tech is 31/57 on third and fourth down conversions and opponents are 35/67. Navy hadn’t allowed one before Air Force got one in the fourth quarter of its 33-10 loss to the Midshipmen.
The Bears forced four turnovers, picking off Mahomes twice and recovering two fumbles as well.
Mahomes’ touchdown passes were 55 yards to Zach Austin (his first career catch), 37 yards to Cameron Batson and 13 yards to Tony Brown. He is a game time decision against Baylor. 1-5, in that order, prior to me tweaking the hell out of them this weekend as I just erased everything and started everyone with a blank slate. He is one of only five players with at least 70 yards receiving in four games this season. Most of Chubb’s damage came on an 83-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. Reginald Davis has 13 catches for 248 yards and 248 touchdowns.
Seth Russell run for 2 yards for a TD.
Tech right guard Justin Murphy suffered a right knee injury in the first half and did not return.
“We’ve got to keep scoring”, Briles told the Baylor radio network on the way to the locker room at the break. The Bears lead the nation in scoring. This followed a trend the Bears have seen all season. Back-up Jarrett Stidham has thrown for 167 yards with 2 touchdowns, and also has a rushing touchdown.
Baylor running back Shock Linwood celebrates a long run for a… Terence Williams has 41 carries for 305 yards and a touchdown.
-Baylor’s Johnny Jefferson runs for 6-yard touchdown. He is questionable with a hamstring injury. While winning all three games this season, Russell leads FBS in passing TDs (15), yards per completion (19.9) and points responsible for game (32).
Baylor wide receiver Jay Lee (4) dives forward for extra yardage…
It seems the only way to stop Baylor’s offense is to host the Bears in cold, rainy, sleeting conditions, as did Oklahoma State in a 49-17 win in 2013 – so if you can control the schedule and control the weather, you’re in good shape. After a couple of drops and poor routes, they definitely settled into their game and played well. The Bears are 5-2 ATS in this series recently.
“I don’t think it was a dominating win”, said Bears coach Art Briles, a Texas Tech graduate and former Red Raiders assistant coach.
“He works very hard“, Kingsbury said. Webb is a solid back-up but he sometimes makes too many mistakes. I don’t think our defense is as bad as last years, I just think that Baylor’s offense is better than last years.
