Torch Run Includes Caring Cops And Special Athletes
The BC Law Enforcement Torch Run visited Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Langley, Surrey and White Rock on Tuesday, May 31.
Michael Kalinsky of the Cecil County Sheriff’s Office planned this year’s Cecil County installment of the annual Maryland Law Enforcement Torch Run to benefit Special Olympics. South Brunswick and Franklin township’s police departments will have runners participating in another Special Olympic Torch Run.
The Virginia Special Olympics sends seven torches out across the Commonwealth.
However, more than just law enforcement get involved.
The torch run starts Thursday morning at 9am. Then it was carried another 6.3 miles to a vehicle rental near downtown Norfolk.
For the 30th year in a row, local law enforcement officers will be leading the way.
On Thursday, June 9 local Milfordians helped carry the torch that began the 2016 Special Olympics Delaware summer games. It is too late to use the group’s online volunteer system to register for service at the summer games – it is better to show up and sign up, Schriml said.
Refreshingly, they also support their fellow athletes (sometimes even during competition) and often end their events celebrating each other, win or lose.
Betsy Jiron, who is the Maryland Law Enforcement Torch Run liaison, applauded the effort in Cecil County on Monday.
“They took possession of the torch on top of Afton Mountain and ran the torch all the way back here to the Charlottesville Police Department”, Knick said. Sign-up takes place early on each day of the event from about 8 a.m.to 10 a.m., he said.
The event aims to create awareness in the community and to raise money for the Maryland Special Olympics program.
“It has a personal touch for me”, Patrick said. He says it’s something he looks forward to all year.
