Tornado Watch Issued in South Jersey
A tornado watch is in effect for much of southeastern Pennsylvania and southern New Jersey and DE until 11 p.m. Wednesday.
The primary threat with any storms will be damaging winds with the possibility of an isolated tornado, according to a hazardous weather notice released this morning.
A new series of tornado warnings has been issued as a band of severe weather approaches the Research Triangle area of North Carolina.
Parts of northeastern North Carolina including Hertford County and parts of Bertie, Northampton and Gates counties were under a tornado warning until 7:45 p.m. At 7:09 p.m., radar indicated a tornado near Scotland Neck, moving northeast at 55 miles per hour.
Severe thunderstorms capable of spawning tornadoes will continue to threaten portions of the eastern states through Wednesday afternoon and evening.
Duke Energy says more than 72,000 customers are without power in North Carolina, while there are almost 28,000 in SC.
“Fortunately, nothing too severe has been reported at this point”.
“Just be vigilant today (about) the weather”, Rusnak said.
A strong thunderstorm is another factor we’ll have to watch late Wednesday as the Storm Prediction Center has placed the entire 69 News viewing area under an enhanced risk for severe thunderstorms.
More than a hundred trailers were damaged when the EF-2 tornado struck the Sugar Hill RV park around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.
There were also severe storm watches and warnings across the region in the afternoon.
Temperatures will rise a bit later Wednesday night before falling back on Thursday.
Winds are expected to range from 20 mph to 35 mph with gusts of up to 70 mph in the western mountains.
There is also a Wind Advisory in effect for Atlantic and Cape May counties from 6 p.m. through midnight.
Schools are closed in Georgetown and Horry counties.
