Toronto taxi drivers’ group plans strike
The NBA All-Star Game is Sunday in Toronto, but fans visiting the city for the weekend might have a hard time getting around.
Sekhon said his allies have not decided whether to launch further protests on the three-day Family Day weekend.
Traditional Toronto taxis are heavily regulated but Uber – and in particular its ride-hailing app UberX – connects paying passengers with private cars that provide a taxi-like service for a fee.
It all culminates in the 65th annual NBA All-Star game at the Air Canada Centre Sunday evening, February 14, featuring the best players from the NBA’s Western conference against the best from the Eastern Conference. “It would only hurt our valued customers and give Uber exactly what they want”.
MONTREAL-Some of Montreal’s taxi and limousine drivers are targeting the city’s airport this morning as part of their protest against against Uber.
City government and business leaders are urging organizers in the taxi industry to reconsider their protest plans. The city’s licensing and standards department is working to re-write rules that will encompass Uber and create a level playing field for all cab operators.
“But I want you to know that I value your contribution and I’m going to keep fighting for you”.
“He’s such a poor mayor, we can’t have a mayor like this”, he told Breakfast Television. The mayor made the comments one day after the formation of United Taxi Workers Association.
The city of Toronto has been no exception, to the point that the city’s taxi drivers rallied in December, blocking downtown traffic.
Transportation Minister Jacques Daoust said last week that the government would take action within the next few weeks to deal with the vehicle service, and he met with taxi drivers on Monday to hear their grievances. “We can’t have the city closed down in that manner and the law enforcement officials will have to take whatever steps they deem appropriate if that sort of thing is engaged in again”, said Tory.
More details on the protest are expected in the next few days.
