Tottenham target insists he was not distracted by failed transfer attempt
The massive bid comes after the Kenya global midfielder was left out of Ronald Koeman’s squad for the weekend’s thumping win over Norwich City after handing in a transfer request, with Koeman claiming that he wasn’t “mentally and physically good enough to play”.
Tottenham’s attempts to sign the player continued until the penultimate day of the mercato, according to the Daily Mail.
But Southampton executive director Les Reed said: “We’d like to tie him down for another five years”. We have offered him the opportunity for a long-term extension.
Instead, the south coast club intend to offer Wanyama a new five-year deal. “Sometimes it is hard to go through such an experience, but I have been through this before and I know how to deal with it. I am good and ready to focus on the game on Sunday”, Wanyama told reporters.
Talking to Kenyan radio previous year, Wanyama said: “I learnt a lot from him, he taught me more and that’s why I have grown as a player and there is a big difference compared to when I was at Celtic”. The speculation does raise a few eyebrows.
“Wanyama got a little bit unsettled with all the talk about Tottenham”, Le Tissier said on Sky Sports News.
However, Koeman is desperate to keep Wanyama at Southampton having already lost fellow midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin to Manchester United this summer and it looks like the Dutchman has now got his wish.
“It might work out very well that there’s an global break, so Victor can relax, go home, see friends and family and then come back fresh and ready for our Premier League campaign”. Congratulations to Midtjylland. They play well, they play out of a good organisation and they scored today and we didn’t. “No change, nothing. We need that commitment from the players”.
