Tourists get shock of lives as humpback spectacularly leaps from ocean
The humpback whale appears out of the water, hops and backflips.
The incredible video footage of the adult whale was shot last Friday in the Bay of Fundy, a body of water between Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.
The animal was captured flinging its massive frame into the air by Penny Graham, the head of a marine life sightseeing tour in the region. “I am unsure I am going to ever stay to see that once more”.
It’s not everyday you get to experience a breaching whale, especially a backflipping one. “That whale was the wrong way up heading in the direction of us”.
Graham said the whale breached about 30 times to put on a show for the boat.
“There was a number of hollering and screaming on that boat”, she stated. “Everybody was clapping and laughing”. It was fantastic to be part of that.
Scientists say whales leap out of the water for various reasons: to shake off parasites, to scare fish into a tighter school to make them easier to catch and eat, and to communicate. But Graham, who admits she’s no scientist, believes what she saw has a much simpler explanation.
Graham said for the past few days, she’s been running tours in the thick fog.
“I think it was doing it out of pure enjoyment”.
