Trae Young, Oklahoma both losing grip on postseason
Getting up for the game should not be hard.
The Oklahoma Sooners are in the midst of a free-fall, and it’s not clear if they’ve hit rock bottom yet.
The Jayhawks (22-6 overall, 11-4 Big 12) so thoroughly dominated during the stretch run the game felt like a blowout from start to finish.
The Oklahoma Sooners are allowing 85.1 points on 46.3 percent shooting during their five-game losing streak, proving that regardless of how talented and explosive Young is, there’s only so much he can do when his team doesn’t play defense.
Five players are averaging at least 12.0 points per game for Kansas, they are Devonte Graham (17.4), Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk (15.3), Azubuike (14.1), Lagerald Vick (12.8) and Malik Newman (12.0).
Here is Oklahoma’s remaining schedule. It’s only happened once, with Iowa State in 1992, who went 5-9 in Big 8 play, and then upset Missouri to reach the tournament semifinal. That would mandate a conference tournament championship to earn the automatic bid. -However, Oklahoma has six Quadrant 1 wins. Team Rebounds: None. Team Turnovers: 10 (18 PTS).
In this video, we discuss the struggles of Young and the Sooners. -When the selection committee released its top 16 teams on February 11, Oklahoma was a 4-seed. Texas Tech, at No. 6, and Kansas, at No. 8, are in the top ten, but West Virginia fell to No. 21.
That sets up a huge week for both the No. 13 Jayhawks (21-6, 10-4 Big 12) and the No. 7 Red Raiders (22-5, 10-4) in relation to the Big 12 race.
Allen Fieldhouse has been the toughest road venue in college basketball for a long time, though this season the Jayhawks have shown some cracks on their home floor.
But that is as close as Oklahoma would get, as the Jayhawks once again caught fire.
It gets interesting, but safely in.
Even when Young got by a perimeter defender the help defense stepped up to make sure he didn’t get into a flow with a layup. But if the Jayhawks win Saturday, two weeks from now might take care of itself.
The freshman sensation scored 26 points when these two teams met last month.
The last time these two teams met, Bill Self got caught napping and found himself out-coached by Lon Kruger. Who will land one of the coveted top seeds in the tournament, and who will land the best of those seeds? This is the most intriguing scenario by far, and perhaps the most likely. You really think the Sooners want to go to a must-win game against their in-state rivals? A reeling team heading to Allen Fieldhouse doesn’t sound like a recipe for success, but it’s what the Sooners have to deal with Monday evening.
That’s the resume analysis.
In this Saturday’s contest, big man Udoka Azubuike gave Kansas a ferocious boost in one of his best games of the season – including a 7-for-10 clip from the foul line.
