Trans Man Takes Selfie Every Day For Three Years To Trace Transition
Testosterone helps transgender men make their appearance more masculine, deepening the voice and allowing them to grow facial hair.
When Jamie Raines was 18, he started taking testosterone as part of his female-to-male transition.
A student has charted his transgender journey over the course of three years with a daily selfie and the resulting time lapse video is incredible.
Raines, who is British, told BuzzFeed that he initially planned on taking the photos for one year but made a decision to continue doing so because he didn’t get any facial hair in the first year. He chose to document his transition, ending up with 1,400 selfies – and a plan to continue documenting the changes.
“I didn’t like looking in the mirror, but then as soon as I started testosterone it was about looking for those changes and then every time you noticed something it was exciting”.
The video caught the attention of Channel 4 who are featuring Jamie in their new documentary, Girls to Men, which airs next week. Watch Jamie’s wonderful transition above. Jaime told Buzzfeed when prompted: “Patience is your best friend with transitioning and it’s good to surround yourself with a community or friends and family that will support you-either online or in real life”. According to Raines, “My mum thinks this was always how I was supposed to be”. “I have had to lug my camera and tripod on holiday and visiting people and sometimes taking the photo can be a very last minute thing!”
