Transgender Rights Ad To Air During Republican Convention On Fox News
The ad, called “Restaurant,” is set to air during Trump’s speech as he accepts the GOP presidential nomination.
“I’m a transgender woman”.
The transgender advocates behind the ad say they hope to raise awareness about discrimination in the wake of a controversial North Carolina law that requires people to use bathrooms that match their gender at birth.
While at a restaurant with friends, the woman gets up to use the restroom and is stopped by a restaurant employee, who directs her to use the men’s room instead of the women’s.
The ad, which will be seen online across the country, will also air nationwide on MSNBC during the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia one week later. On Friday, Republican Gov. Charlie Baker of MA signed into law a bill that ensures explicit protections for transgender people in public places, including restrooms. The spot was created by a coalition of gay and transgender rights organizations, including the Fairness USA project, the All Americans Education Fund, the National Center for Transgender Equality, and the Equality Ohio Education Fund. The ad features the story of one transgender woman and her struggle to comply with the law while avoiding the harassment of using a male restroom.
“Safety and privacy in bathrooms are important for all of us”, she adds.
“It can be hard to understand what it means to be transgender, especially if you’ve never met a transgender person”, Kupec says in the ad.
“Missouri law still offers no protections for transgender people in employment, housing, and public accommodations, meaning that hardworking transgender Missourians can still be fired from their jobs, kicked out of their homes, and denied access to basic public accommodations and bathrooms simply because of who we are”.
Shortly after North Carolina passed its now-infamous House Bill 2, she told Rolling Stone: “At the end of the day, I don’t plan on changing my behavior whatsoever”. “Our newly released survey data shows that 59 percent of transgender people avoided bathrooms in the a year ago out of fear of harassment”.
