Transport for London to take first Toyota Mirai fuel cell electric vehicles
To further develop and advance these clean energy technologies, the Department selected seven projects to address the hydrogen and fuel cells research and development area including hydrogen production via microbial biomass conversion, low platinum group metal catalyst development for fuel cell applications, development of integrated intelligent hydrogen dispensers, and hydrogen delivery pipeline manufacturing. “We are pleased to support the recognition of the first-ever National Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Day October 8, aptly chosen to represent the atomic weight of hydrogen (1.008)”.
The arrival of the zero-emission cars is supported by the construction of hydrogen refuelling stations, while the Mayor also plans to introduce the world’s first Ultra Low Emission Zone from 2020 which will boost the market for the technology. More than 50,000 hydrogen fuel cell units were shipped throughout the world in 2014. Air Products has available several SmartFuel station concepts incorporating modular and expandable technology and a global patent portfolio, with additional patents pending, related to the advancements to be deployed under this protocol.
A pan-European consortium led by Loughborough-based Intelligent Energy is developing a new fuel cell for the mass automotive market.
Hydrogen powered vehicles emit only water vapour from the tailpipe but are on a par with conventional vehicles in terms of size, driving range, speed and refuelling time.
The vehicle is Toyota’s first mass-market hydrogen fuel cell auto and went on sale in Japan at the end of a year ago. The company has been involved in over 200 hydrogen fueling projects in the United States and 20 countries worldwide. Cars, trucks, vans, buses, scooters, forklifts, locomotives, planes, cell towers, material handling equipment, and even submarines have been fuelled with trend-setting Air Products’ technologies.
A lack of widespread hydrogen fueling stations is one of the challenges facing the adoption of hydrogen fuel.
Hydrogen can be produced through a wide variety of renewable energy sources including solar and wind power.
