Travel misery continues on East Coast in wake of nor’easter

As of about 2:30 p.m. Monday, more than 56,000 MA electric customers remained without power in the wake of the long-lasting storm that lashed the coast Friday and over the weekend.
More than 3,000 flights have already been cancelled within, into or out of the United States yesterday and more than 2,400 others delayed, according to the website FlightAware.
The Eastern Seaboard was hammered by wind gusts exceeding 50 miles per hour, with possible winds of 80 to 90 miles per hour on Cape Cod.
Utility crews are making steady progress restoring power in MA following the powerful nor’easter that brought hurricane-force wind gusts and coastal flooding to the region. But the greatest danger to the residents there is a threat of flooding many streets on the meter flooded with excess ice water. The high winds and rainfall made power failures a hard issue.

Amtrak, which had temporarily suspended service between Washington and Boston, resumed modified service in the Northeast corridor by Saturday morning.

By early Friday afternoon, 700,000 customers in Eastern states had lost electricity, the AP reports, with the highest numbers in Virginia, Pennsylvania and NY.
As of 10 p.m. on Friday, after the storm had been walloping the MA coast for about 12 hours, MEMA reported 449,560 electricity customers without power. More than 100,000 customers lost power in Washington alone.
The federal government has also shuttered all of its offices.
“We’ve been here a long time and we’ve never seen it as bad as this”, said Alex Barmashi, as he took in the fearsome spectacle along Cape Cod Bay in Bourne, Massachusetts. It’s brought not only flooding but unsafe air travel as well due to high winds.
WFXT-TV caught submerged cars in Quincy, Massachusetts, south of Boston, as residents ignored police urgings to remain off roads.
Gov. Charlie Baker activated 200 Massachusetts National Guard members to help victims.
The National Weather Service in Boston said in a tweet that winds are likely to remain an issue through Monday and that it’s monitoring for a potential nor’easter midweek.
