Travel-related Zika virus case confirmed in Canyon County
The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) said Aedes aegypti mosquitoes are found in all countries in the Americas except Canada and continental Chile, and the virus will likely reach all countries and territories of the region where Aedes mosquitoes are found.
In addition to the new “homegrown cases”, 634 travel-related Zika infections have been recorded in Florida and 86 involving pregnant women, according to the new report.
Since Zika can be transmitted sexual and cause devastating birth defects for infants born with the disease, officials with the Center for Disease Control recommends people who have travelled use contraceptives during sex and pregnant women should not travel to area where the diseases is prevalent. The disorder can create a lifetime of complications, including both physical and mental developmental issues.
There is no vaccine or treatment for the virus, making prevention essential.
“Locally, what we are trying to do is make sure people are aware that it is mosquito season, and there’s West Nile virus and other mosquito-borne illnesses to be aware of”, Cason warned.
As of September 7 the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports 2,920 cases of Zika virus disease this year in the United States.
The latest unfortunate news comes from a team of Italian doctors reporting on the peculiar case of a 32-year-old woman infected with Zika while staying in the Dominican Republic earlier this spring.
