Trevor Noah: Emmanuel Macron Is The Belle To Donald Trump’s Beast
He has criticized a 2015 agreement which effectively lifted some western sanctions on Iran in exchange for curbs on its nuclear program. Yet the pair seem to have found a certain respect for each other, ever since Mr Macron gave Mr Trump a knuckle-crunching handshake when they first met a year ago.
“My view – I don’t know what your president will decide – is that he will get rid of this deal on his own, for domestic reasons”, Macron said. “Let’s face it. There is no Planet B”, Macron said, to extended applause.
Russia, China, Germany, Britain and France, which all struck the accord with Iran and the United States, see the deal as the best way to stop Iran from developing a nuclear bomb.
He said France remains committed to the bottom line goal of preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons. We finished, at least nearly, our work with respect to ISIS in Syria, ISIS in Iraq. “I think we’re fairly close to understanding each other”.
At times during the almost hour-long speech, delivered in English, he took turns playing into his friendly relationship with Trump, while nudging, forcefully at times, against their differences.
On Tuesday President Donald Trump welcomed France’s president Emmanuel Macron to the White House for his very first state dinner created to show global solidarity.
“We made this awful deal but we’re going to discuss it”, he said.
Given the American president’s volatility and his team’s hostility to any compromise over Iran, this is a gamble for Mr Macron. “I believe we can build the right answers.by negotiating through the WTO and building cooperative solutions, ” he said. But after the speech, Macron insisted that their relationship “on a personal and national level is excellent”.
Trump did not promise to leave the troops in Syria but made clear they would not be withdrawn imminently. But we’re going to be coming home relatively soon. We’ll be coming home. “We are in close and constructive exchange within the EU-3 and the USA”, said a spokesman. Tehran says its nuclear program is only for peaceful means.
France’s Emmanuel Macron left Washington looking like a superstar – whether or not he changed President Donald Trump’s mind on staying in Syria, how to contain Iran or anything at all.
“On Iran, we must contextualize this subject within the challenges of the region”.
He also addressed a point made by others – that withdrawing would undermine USA leverage and credibility in coming talks with North Korea about eliminating its nuclear weapons.
Again and again, the French leader took on the policies Trump has pursued over the last 15 months.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel faces hard talks with Trump on Friday during a visit at a time when Washington and Berlin are at odds over a range of issues from trade to Iran.
