Trey Burke scores 24 as Utah Jazz edge Memphis Grizzlies 89-79
What followed that moment was easily the strongest stand the Griz took in a loss this season. However, a furious fourth-quarter rally fueled by a 20-4 run couldn’t prevent the Griz from an 89-79 loss to the Jazz in Vivint Smart Home Arena. I was pleased with our effort overall. Matt Barnes finished with 11 points.
Memphis (3-4) almost stole the game.
To put it another way: Memphis has already trailed by 20 points or more for 62 minutes this season… compared to 88 minutes for the whole of 2014-15.
But that was as close as the Griz got. Gasol chipped in with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
“We’ve just got to play harder”, Griz forward Zach Randolph said. “It’s tough right now”.
“We can be better”, Joerger said. The Jazz shot just 18.8 percent (3-of-16) and committed seven turnovers. The baskets trimmed the Grizzlies’ deficit to 14 points.
SAME STARTERS: Six games in and Utah has used the same starting lineup each game with rookie Raul Neto and Rodney Hood at the guard line with Trey Burke and Alec Burks coming off the bench.
“My teammates found me and I was ready to shoot”, Burke said. It’s just a matter of reads for me. That’s all with coach Gregg Popovich openly hissing his personal dislike for the 3-point shot. “You hit a couple and you start feeling it”. Last season alone, the champion Warriors had five different players launching at least 200, led by Steph Curry with more than 600 and Klay Thompson 500. “We had 55 shots in the paint and we converted 19 of them and didn’t shoot well from three….”
Randolph struggled to finish around the rim.
The Grizzlies scored the first five points and held a 13-5 lead, appearing to be on the verge of snapping out of an early season funk. Utah allows an average of 80.3 points in its four road games but was routed 108-92 by Portland in its lone home contest.TV: 9 p.m. ET, NBATV, FSN Southeast (Memphis), ROOT (Utah)ABOUT THE GRIZZLIES (3-3): The usually-stout Memphis defense surrendered 72 points in the second and third quarters against Portland to let the game get away, and the team is searching for answers.
In an era where the National Basketball Association is thriving more and more on the long ball, the Grizzlies continue to sell themselves short in 3-point shooting. “Now you need every single win, don’t get me wrong, in the West. But to go out and play better and be more who we are on a nightly basis would be good”. “And the second quarter, we lose that momentum. He knows where my heart is on that and I know where his is”.
