Trimble lifts No. 3 Maryland over Wisconsin
Melo Trimble hit a very deep and very contested three pointer with less than 2-seconds remaining to push 3rd-ranked Maryland over unranked Wisconsin in Madison, 63-60.
In a 60-60 game between the Maryland Terrapins and the Wisconsin Badgers, Trimble hit quite the shot to win the game.
The talented sophomore guard’s three-pointer nullified an admirable comeback attempt by the Badgers, who were down by eight with 90 seconds left in the game. Junior guard Bronson Koenig’s 3-pointer with 23 seconds left tied the game 60-60, and set the stage for an exciting finish.Trimble, who scored a game-high 21 points, strung together a 10-1 run all his own as the Terps took control at 56-48 with 6 minutes, 40 seconds left in the game. They came here in part to taunt Milwaukee native Diamond Stone, the freshman center who chose Maryland over the Badgers last spring, but it wasn’t Stone who left them crushed.
It was Trimble who ripped off 10 straight points to give Maryland an eight-point lead after Wisconsin had pulled ahead midway through the second half. Carter had a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. He picked up a second foul with 5 minutes remaining in the first half, checking out with 4 points and 2 steals in 8 minutes. Damonte Dodd missed a few easy tip-ins and traveled to waive off a wide-open dunk that would’ve added to his impressive numbers, but the lesser-known Terrapins center was a dominant force in Maryland’s 4-point first half lead.
Trimble left them disappointed in the end.
Wisconsin went cold from the field for the next 8 minutes until the backcourt duo of Showalter and Koenig drew the Badgers back with long-range shooting.
Turgeon elected to not call a timeout and let Maryland play for the final shot. He was still smiling as Hayes released a desperation heave that went begging as the buzzer sounded.
