Trooper Shot in Cobb Police Chase is Alert; I-75 Still Jammed
WGCL reported the trooper is Jacob Fields, who has been with the Georgia State Patrol for three years. A Georgia State Patrol spokesperson said that the wounded trooper was alert and conscious Wednesday evening, and that his family was with him. When the suspect’s vehicle was stopped, the suspect got out and shots were exchanged nearly immediately, according to the Georgia State Patrol.
The pursuit began after the trooper attempted a traffic stop but the driver refused to pull over, Perry said. He was taken to the hospital. Fields was shot in the stomach underneath his bulletproof vest and in the ankle.

Mark Perry said Fields was shot twice and returned fire. The GBI was headed to the scene to take over the investigation. When asked if there was dashcam video of the incident, Capt. Perry said the patrol cars involved had been turned over to the GBI.
Marietta Police spokeswoman Brittany Wallace said the shooting caused all but two lanes of the busy highway to shut down. “Unfortunately, that crime scene is on I-75 during rush hour”, Perry said. Officials say I-75 South is blocked at S. Marietta Parkway, and all traffic is being routed off the interstate at that exit.
The suspect was in surgery as of 5:30 p.m., Perry said, but he did not have any other information regarding the suspect’s injuries. All motorists are advised to avoid the area.
