Troubled Florida QB Treon Harris decides to transfer
Though his completion percentage is suspect at best (50.3% for his career), Harris does offer intrigue as a run-first quarterback, capable of winning games as a respectable dual threat passer.
After splitting time with Will Grier to start the season, Harris eventually became the full-time starter after Grier’s suspension and started in nine games.
He started 15 games in his first two seasons at UF, where he completed 174 of his 346 passes for 2,695 yards, 18 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Harris gained starting experience as a true freshman in relief of Jeff Driskel and was last year’s opening week starter before giving way to Will Grier.
Harris came to UF as a four-star recruit out of Booker T. Washington, where he led the school to back-to-back Class 4A state championships as a junior and senior. The Gators’ offense wasn’t the same with Harris under center.
Former Florida starting QB Treon Harris will transfer.
He was set to move to receiver during spring practice before he and sophomore receiver Antonio Callaway were suspended for an unspecified violation of team rules. McElwain remains under contract through the 2020 season.
Should Harris transfer to another FBS school, he would have two years of eligibility remaining after sitting out this fall. He’ll make $900,000 per year for the next two years, with an opportunity to make more than $1 million annually.
Responding to a public records request, the University Athletic Association released details of Collins’ new contract along with several of coach Jim McElwain’s other assistants.
Offensive line coach Mike Summers got a nearly $300,000 raise; a signing bonus of almost $40,000; and his contract was extended by two years, through January 31, 2018.
The school bumped McElwain from $3.5 million to $4.25 million annually, making him the highest-paid coach in the division. He received a raise of almost $10,000 and a $100,000 retention bonus after last season.
He could end up being a big part for any team going into the 2017 season, or 2016 if he goes down to the FCS level.
