Troubled Pro Bowl LB Aldon Smith released by 49ers following latest arrest
When looking at Smith’s past seasons in the NFL it might be tempting to take a risk on him; 19.5 sacks two years ago after a 14 sack performance in his rookie season is enough for any GM to raise an eyebrow. If you asked them, I think they’d say the same thing.
Sure, there is no doubt that in a vacuum Smith could be a difference maker for Oakland, or just about any other team he might play for. Jenkins talked about how Tomsula’s presence and what he said is something we rarely see among coaches in professional sports. “This is a day that doesn’t have anything to do about football”.
Sunday’s practice is closed to the public, the team having moved it to its training fields for a third straight day because of Levi’s Stadium’s problematic sod.
“Nothing even close”, Tomsula said.
“We’ve got to keep rolling”, Bethea said. Go get the help.
The police reported that Smith hit a parked auto as he was backing out and then continued to exit his vehicle and caused additional damage to the parked vehicle with his auto door. This battle seems to be bigger than Smith, which explains why the 49ers are hellbent on supporting him, on or off the team.
Authorities said Smith then left the scene without reporting the collision or leaving any identifying information.
The 25-year-old was released by the 49ers following his arrest for driving under the influence, his fourth detainment over the past three years.
“This organization has tried very hard to help Aldon fight his issues”, the 49ers team said in a statement. “That comes from our ownership down”. This has nothing to do with football right now. Smith was charged yesterday with driving under the influence (DUI), hit and run and vandalism.
Smith, upon posting bail, told reporters as he left jail that justice would prevail because: “It wasn’t a DUI”. I need to speak, and I want everybody to understand, this wasn’t DUI.
Why did Jim Tomsula, and not Trent Baalke, step to the podium to announce Aldon Smith’s release on Friday? Prosecutors declined to file charges in that case.
“If one person out there reads this and they’re struggling, get help”, Tomsula said “You’re worth it…. Find it, it’s there”. He was suspended for the first nine games of last season for violating the NFL’s personal conduct and substance-abuse policies.
Tomsula reiterated many times that the 49ers will continue to support Smith going forward.
On September 20, 2013, Smith was once again arrested in San Jose on suspicion of DUI and possession of marijuana.
Smith was arrested Thursday night, according to the Santa Clara Police Department.
Smith emerged as one of the NFLs top pass rushers in 2012. His impact dropped off considerably once he returned to field, as he registered just 15 combined tackles and two sacks in seven games.
