Troy Tulowitzki reportedly traded to Blue Jays for Jose Reyes, minor leaguers
The Mets have at least talked to Colorado about Troy Tulowitkzi, Fox’s Ken Rosenthal reports, but the Rockies seem unlikely to trade their star shortstop.
Tulo will receive a $2 million assignment bonus for being traded, and his contract from here on out is converted to include a full no-trade clause. Relief pitcher LaTroy Hawkins is also reportedly heading to the Blue Jays, filling another of their needs as they push toward the postseason. In exchange for Tulowitzki, the Rockies will get Jose Reyes and minor leaguers, though not all the details on who the Blue Jays are sending to Colorado have not emerged yet.
“Whatever happens on the Rockies’ end happens, but for me to sit here and try to force my way out of here, that’s not the case”, Tulowitzki told reporters, according to MLB.com. He has $94 million remaining on his deal, not counting the $15 million option.
The Rockies will save over $40 million in the trade.
Both Tulowitzki, 30, and Reyes have done multiple stints on the disabled list over the course of their careers.
Tulowitzki was hitting. 300 with 12 home runs and and 53 RBI. The Blue Jays, who now sit seven games behind the Yankees in the AL East race, were never seen as a likely fit due to Reyes’ supposed status as their long-term shortstop.
Hawkins, a reliever, has a 3.63 ERA and two saves this season.
Toronto already has one of the top offensive teams in the Majors, as it has scored a league-leading 528 runs this season and is fifth in the league in batting average.
At 50-50, the Blue Jays are three games behind the Twins for the second and final Wild Card spot, and are seemingly counting on Tulowitzki and his.300/.348/.471 slash line to lead them there. The Rockies are 42-55 and in last place in the NL West.
