Truex can expect a “free-for-all” in 2015 NASCAR Sprint Cup finale
Busch was the first Chase driver to attempt a third-round lap, setting the third-best overall speed (176.062 mph), behind Hamlin and Joey Logano.
In case you haven’t heard, the NASCAR Sprint Cup series determines the 2015 champion at Homestead-Miami Speedway on Sunday.
Truex qualified 11th and with Gordon’s run in the second round, he prevented Harvick from advancing to the final round of qualifying.
Jeff Gordon says he would be content to only lead one more lap in his NASCAR career, if it is the last lap of this weekend’s Homestead Sprint Cup decider.
“Damn it”, Busch said missing the pole. Busch has not won since, but has finished in the top ten in ten of the last 15 races, easily making his way into the top 30, and qualifying on points.
Nobody was happier than Gordon, who overcame a disappointing first run to qualify fifth for the final race of his 23-year career.
Gordon had the skill and the guts to race Earnhardt at close quarters, which the older driver relished in his competitors.
Mile High Sports motorsports insider Kurt Hansen has been with the team off and on throughout this magical season and spoke extensively on Truex’s chances during his final Race Central radio show before the big race. And the Charlotte race was postponed a day due to rain. So to me, yeah, there’s going to be a few insanity and I’m just taking it all in and being really calm and cool about it all. “That’s what we’ve been fighting for since February”, said Buescher, who drives for Roush Fenway Racing. As a result, he said he wasn’t aggressive enough in qualifying, which left him scrambling the rest of the night. I don’t think that’s a huge surprise.
“There’s only one lap I want to lead, and that’s the last one”, he said of the Homestead race. “Of course, pit selection has a lot to do with that, but once the groove move up top it’s kind of hard to pass. So even though there are multiple grooves, you’ve got to do it in the first couple of laps”.
Story line: Kevin Harvick, driver of the No. 4 Stewart-Haas Racing Chevrolet, is the defending champion.
“I’ve never been injured that bad in my life, so I didn’t really know what to expect or know what it was going to be about”, said Busch.
At his final race at Atlanta this season, Gordon said, “I know I have told this story many times; I still have that money clip that Richard handed out that day with my starting position”.
“I’ve said this a number of times this year, but Jeff is just a guy that’s meant a lot to the sport”, he said. Matt Kenseth is good there, Carl Edwards is good there and Denny Hamlin is especially good there, so I feel like, as a whole, everybody who can hopefully help me and give me everything I need to have the tools necessary to go into the race so that we can perform to our best and hopefully race for a championship. “He created such a role model or a total package, it’s hard to think you can replace him”.
Go ahead, just try and wrestle the NASCAR Sprint Cup championship away from Kevin Harvick. The reason I was able to win at so many different tracks was the consistency that our team had and that I had at all the different tracks…. Restarts will be critical, too, because that’s the best opportunity to pass – and the one place a driver can lose spots quickly if he botches his takeoff.
