Trumbo hits 41st HR as Orioles breeze past Yankees 8-0
The Orioles hit three doubles and four home runs, giving them a MLB-best 213 this year. “It’s just been a consistent threat we’ve had all year”.
The Orioles 25-year-old flamethrower has also registered a 4-3 record and a stellar 2.04 ERA over 15 games (nine starts) versus the Yankees during his young career, and has firmly established himself as the go-to guy any time the Birds take on the pinstripes.
New York’s offensive eruption allowed Green to escape with a no-decision against the Orioles last time out after he surrendered three homers and was charged with four runs on seven hits in 4 2/3 innings.
“We know how good they play here”, Girardi said before the game.
Dylan Bundy (8-5) allowed two hits and four walks over 5 2/3 innings.
“They are really risky”, Girardi said of the Orioles. You can never rule this squad as down and out…because they never say die. I’ll give NY a slight winning edge as well.
Mark Trumbo had two hits, including his major league-leading 41st home run run. For the first time, the Orioles have three 30 home run hitters: Trumbo, Davis and Machado. He’s the 20th player to hit 400 homers. He walked four and struck out five.
“It’s definitely frustrating, especially since I’ve been swinging the bat well, ” said Hicks, who struggled to reach.200 for much of the first half of the season but batted.280 in August. “Things like that that have been kind of working against us, we got some breaks tonight”.
Left with a lost game and a lost starter, the Yankees’ only silver lining was the scoreless big league debut of Jonathan Holder – another minor league standout given a September call-up – and the hitless return of Luis Severino, who pitched a 1-2-3 seventh inning. NY could muster just two hits against four pitchers.
Tigers 3, White Sox 2: JaCoby Jones doubled twice in his second major league game, then dashed home for the winning run on Tyler Collins’ sacrifice fly in the ninth inning to lift Detroit. He struck out the first batter he faced, Adam Jones, and catcher Gary Sanchez threw the game ball into the NY dugout for safe keeping in one of the few Yankee highlights.
“We can see it right there in front of us now, so there”s a lot more motivation for that, but I think we still have to keep the same mindset,” he said.
Donnie Hart, Vance Worley and Tommy Hunter combined to pitch a flawless 3 1/3 innings.
Alvarez’s 20th, a two-run shot that landed on Eutaw Street, his second this season, gave the Orioles a 3-0 lead. His fastball, which got up to 96 miles per hour in the first inning was down to 91-92 when manager Joe Girardi and trainer Steve Donohue went to the mound. Chris Davis homers to center field.
Trumbo followed by going deep on an 0-2 pitch, the 17th time this season the Orioles have hit back-to-back home runs.
Goody allowed two runs in 1 1/3 innings before Kirby Yates came on in the fourth and gave up a two-run homer to Machado to give the Orioles an 8-0 margin.
The Birds still find themselves in a must-win type of situation for the remainder of the weekend, as NY is still in town for two more games.
