‘Trumbo’ leads Screen Actor nods; ‘Joy’, ‘The Martian’ snubbed
Then Beasts of No Nation, The Big Short, Carol, The Danish Girl, Room, Spotlight, and Steve Jobs, have two nominations each.
This year’s Globes awarded a number of shows and stories that were about minorities: Matt Bomer won for HBO’s aids drama the Normal Heart; Gina Rodriguez won for Jane The Virgin; and Transparent earned best TV series, musical or comedy, with its star Jeffrey Tambor taking home best actor.
Other nominees in the category are Mirren, Cate Blanchett (“Carol”), Brie Larson (“Room”) and Saoirse Ronan (“Brooklyn”), all of whom have been on handicappers’ lists.
Dame Helen Mirren was also nominated in multiple categories, scoring nods for her lead performance in Woman In Gold and her supporting role as Hedda Hopper in Trumbo.
He will compete against Johnny Depp for “Black Mass”, Leonardo DiCaprio for “The Revenant“, Michael Fassbender for his work on “Steve Jobs” and Eddie Redmayne for “The Danish Girl”.
“Trumbo, ‘ the movie about the 1947 Hollywood blacklist, led the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) nominations on Wednesday in a diverse field that hinted at likely Oscar contenders but snubbed presumed front-runners ‘The Martian” and new Jennifer Lawrence drama ‘Joy.
In the television categories, fantasy saga Game of Thrones, spy thriller Homeland and political drama House of Cards led the way with three nominations each.
The twenty-second edition of the SAG will be held on January 30th from the Shrine Exposition Center in Los Angeles, California, under the presentation of Anna Faris and Anthony Mackie.
It would be great to see cast of Beasts of No Nation win the SAG Award and for Elba to leave both ceremonies with an armload of awards.
Unlike the Oscars and Golden Globes, SAG lets film distributors decide the categories in which to place their candidates. Other nominees included Spotlight, with a nod for outstanding performance by female actor in a supporting role for Canadian Rachel McAdams, and The Big Short.
With both Beasts and the hit N.W.A. biopic Straight Outta Compton scoring ensemble cast nominations, the diversity problem that plagued the SAGs and awards season in general past year is less pronounced. Like Aduba, Kemper was nominated for Best Actor in a Comedy Series.
Broadway veterans and theater stars abounded in this year’s esteemed list of nominations.
Nicole Kidman (“Grace of Monaco“), Queen Latifah (“Bessie”), Susan Sarandon (“The Secret Life of Marilyn Monroe“), Kristen Wiig (“The Spoils Before Dying“) and Christina Ricci (“The Lizzie Borden Chronicles“) garnered nods for their performances in a TV movie or miniseries.
