“Trumbo” leads U.S. Screen Actors Guild Award nods
With this week’s all-important SAG and Golden Globe nominations just announced, Gold Derby’s Tom O’Neil (now a part of the PMC family that also owns Deadline) and I return for Round 2 of our discussion about where the Oscar race now stands.
The Screen Actors Guild have released the nominees for their 2015 awards, which are usually seen as holding important clues for the Oscars.
Though “Straight Outta Compton” was a box office and critical hit, its award season prospects were a big unknown.
In the television categories, fantasy saga Game of Thrones, spy thriller Homeland and political drama House of Cards led the way with three nominations each.
Certain favorites are standing out from the acting pack with SAG nominations: the stars of Carol (Cate Blanchett as lead actress and Rooney Mara as supporting actress), Brie Larson in Room and Leonardo DiCaprio in The Revenant.
Moving up the SAG nominations to before the holiday break may influence Oscar choices more than usual – if only because academy members can consider SAG’s choices when deciding which screeners to catch.
It’s such a huge honor to be recognized by my friends and peers, ‘ said Elba, who also earned a best leading TV drama actor nod for ‘Luther. Members of the SAG Awards nominating committee were invited to screenings of the latter, though.
“Trumbo” and TV series “House of Cards” are leading the list of nominees for the 2016 SAG Awards.
There were more diverse individual nominees in television than film, though, thanks to nominations for Elba, “Orange is the New Black’s” Uzo Aduba and Viola Davis of “How to Get Away With Murder“.
On the other hand, the lead actress category was relatively predictable – minus Jennifer Lawrence, who was not nominated for her role in “Joy”.
Both productions, which feature black male casts, were picked at a time when Hollywood has been criticised for lack of racial diversity.
The Screen Actors Guild Awards honour the best film and television performances of the year and have traditionally served as a helpful indicator of potential Oscar acting nominees.
The film’s star Bryan Cranston – of “Breaking Bad” fame – is up for an award for his portrayal of Trumbo, and co-star Helen Mirren was also tapped for a best supporting actress prize for her role as conservative gossip columnist Hedda Hopper.
The twenty-second edition of the SAG will be held on January 30th from the Shrine Exposition Center in Los Angeles, California, under the presentation of Anna Faris and Anthony Mackie.
He will be competing with Michael Fassbender, who portrayed the Apple founder in “Steve Jobs”; Eddie Redmayne for his cross-dressing role in “The Danish Girl”; Bryan Cranston for “Trumbo”; and Johnny Depp as gangster-fugitive in “Black Mass”.
