Trump adds to lead in Wisconsin amid recount
Stein has spearheaded the recount effort in Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin – Rust Belt states that provided crucial and narrow victories to President-elect Donald Trump on his march to the White House.
Michigan’s recount started Monday.
Goldsmith’s ruling was issued just after midnight Monday morning after a rare Sunday hearing in federal court.
2, Attorney General Bill Schuette filed a lawsuit on behalf of the people of the state of Michigan to stop a “frivolous request” by Green Party candidate Jill Stein to recount the entire state’s presidential election results by hand, a request that will cost Michigan taxpayers millions of dollars and threatens to silence all Michigan votes for President. The court ordered the board to reconsider and reject the recount petition, saying Stein had no standing because she had no chance of winning the election.
Update: On further reflection, let’s say that Michigan’s recount will likely come to a halt.
The recount will proceed for the time being, but the court ordered the state election board to deny Stein’s recount petition.
The recounts shall continue!
Stein has said the goal of the recount is to establish confidence in the US election system, saying she wants to allay suspicions of irregularities.
The 2016 election recount effort is shifting to MI and Pennsylvania.
The Wisconsin recount is well underway. “I would not be shocked to find that the [ESS ballot scanner] DS200 is vulnerable to some of these, but I do not know it to be vulnerable”. The votes will be counted, unless they’re not real candidates for president.
Yet Stein’s lawyers contend that those retabulations are not enough and only confirm that the electronic voting machines calculated the number of ballots cast correctly – not whether someone was manipulating those ballots from afar.
Clerk Linda Talsma has a plan in place to recount the approximately 30,000 ballots in one day. Meanwhile, only approximately one-tenth of one percent of votes needed to have been misread to have affected the outcome of the election.
After Stein’s supporters filed affidavits for the recount, elections officials checked out 75 of more than 1686 voting divisions. And if you’re truly anxious that our election machines could get hacked, then you should encourage your state government to implement post-election audits for the future. Moments later, a state appeals court ruled that the recount should not have been permitted.
MI is one of three states narrowly won by Donald Trump in which Stein has sought a recount.
In Wisconsin, Mr Trump had widened his victory margin over Ms Clinton by 146 votes, with 23 of the state’s 72 counties having finished their recounts.
The presidential recount has been completed in several counties in southeastern Wisconsin – and President-elect Donald Trump has added to his lead over Hillary Clinton.
That TRO allowed the recount to begin immediately, after state officials said it would not begin until two days later.
