Trump Barred From Annual Conservative Gathering
At the least, the latest flare-up underscored the potential challenges Trump poses for his rivals as they struggle to react to him without deviating from their own message or alienating the conservatives who are enamored with his insurgent, unconventional bid.
“Only Rosie O’Donnell”, Trump blurted out, before Kelly could finish her sentence. Following Trump’s Friday comments, he was summarily dis-invited from this weekend’s RedState Gathering in Atlanta, possibly the first machination in the long awaited establishment blacklisting of the black horse candidate.
“As much as I do personally like Donald Trump, his comment about Megyn Kelly on CNN is a bridge too far for me”, said conservative pundit Erick Erickson, editor of RedState blog and organiser of the event.
They criticized his refusal to commit to backing the eventual Republican nominee – if not Trump himself – and accused him of being no more forthcoming than traditional politicians. “It is unfortunate to have to disinvite him”, he continued. “There. Is. No. Excuse”.
“I think the big problem this country has is being politically correct”, when asked about the time he told an Apprentice candidate she would look better “on her knees”.
“Mr. Trump: There. Is”. “I stand with @MegynKelly”.
Speaking at the RedState Gathering itself, Republican presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee said the comments were a reflection on Trump, not the party, Politico reported.
Mr Trump said Megyn Kelly of Fox News “had blood coming out of her eyes, blood coming out of her wherever”.
“Re Megyn Kelly quote: “you could see there was blood coming out of her eyes, blood coming out of her wherever” (NOSE)”.
In fact, a food service is offering $5 vouchers every time Trump mentions Mexico in a public contest.
In response, Trump’s campaign issued the following statement: “This is just another example of weakness through being politically correct”.
Trump struck back at Erickson Saturday morning, his campaign releasing a statement accusing Erickson of being just the type of “establishment” conservative Trump is campaigning against. “Only a deviant would think anything else”.
But Erickson has called First Lady Michelle Obama a “Marxist harpy”, once labeled retired Supreme Court Justice David Souter a “goat f–ing child molester”, and slammed Texas state Sen.
And apparently as part of the spin doctoring effort, Trump is now scheduled to appear Sunday on ABC television on one of the top US current events programs, “This Week”.
The size of the audience blew past predictions by media experts and was more than double Fox News Channel’s previous largest audience, the 11.8 million viewers who tuned in on election night in November 2012.
In a brutal tweet Friday he let the broadcaster know it. Event organizer Erik Erikson, a conservative commentator, told the Washington Post that he uninvited Trump because, “I’m not going to have a guy on stage with my wife and daughter in the crowd who thinks a tough question from a woman is because of hormones”.
