Trump begged senator not to pass Russian Federation sanctions bill
Beyond the party leadership, the USA president has publicly attacked a string of Republican lawmakers – including Senators John McCain, Jeff Flake, Lindsey Graham, Dean Heller, Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski – at the risk of weakening his chances of driving legislation through Congress. Please, please Mr. President, don’t mention any names.’ So I won’t. And on the debt ceiling, conservatives in the House have made it clear that they won’t budge unless legislation includes spending reforms. Jeff Flake stoking the GOP’s often-insufficient outrage at the things that Trump thinks, and says, and does.
That’s not the only phone call Trump made to a senator related to Russian Federation, either. When Barack Obama was president, she was the sole member of the GOP to vote against a series of show votes that party leaders held to repeal Obama’s signature achievement, knowing that he would not sign them.
And the downside of having 10 Democratic incumbents up for reelection in states Trump carried are a bevy of potentially messy primaries for the right to face them.
Sen. Susan Collins, a moderate Republican, said Monday that she was unsure whether President Donald Trump would be her party’s nominee for president again in 2020. “We still have a huge movement, and we will make something of this Trump presidency”.
“I would just say it’s important we stay unified”, he said. “We’ve got to deliver”.
McConnell has been griping privately about Trump, per recent reports, further complicating matters.
“Our new president, of course, has not been in this line of work before”.
President Trump went after Arizona’s two senators at his rally in Phoenix without referring to them by name. If sensible, patriotic and, yes, loyal Republicans organize a challenge to the president now, the answer to the GOP’s post-Trump dilemma will be just within reach. And most importantly for those of us loyal to the Republican Party, it would forever betray the Grand Old Party we still firmly believe in.
Instead of hammering that message, the president used his bully pulpit to criticize Republicans for failing to pass a long-promised health care bill to dismantle the Affordable Care Act. “It’s really a remarkable and harmful situation”, said GOP strategist Brian Walsh. But this week, nobody from the White House, no Republicans from the House of Representatives, or Republican from the Senate would appear on Meet the Press.
The White House said it does not discuss contents of calls.
President Trump’s relationship with Congress has become more and more strained as he struggles to find legislative wins.
Reviving one of his biggest campaign promises, Trump pressed Congress to build a wall on the nation’s southern border, threatening to shut down the government if Congress doesn’t move forward.
In the near term, the most likely scenario is for Congress to approve a short-term continuing resolution in September that would fund the government for a matter of months.
“If this is the Republican Party, then I’m not a Republican”, he said.
