Trump blames Ryan, McConnell for veterans bill ‘mess’

Whether that legislative strategy would have worked can not be known.

Lawmakers return to Washington in September, after their August recess and the Labor Day holiday.

The government has enough money to pay its bills until September 29. That would have enormous consequences in the financial markets.

In a March 8 letter to Speaker Ryan, Mnuchin said the outstanding debt of the United States had reached its statutory limit and that the Treasury Department would “start taking certain extraordinary measures in order to temporarily prevent the United States from defaulting on its obligations”.

She continued, “We’re disappointed that Obamacare – they failed to get it repealed and replaced”. He also said the idea of tying debt ceiling legislation to the veterans bill had been considered, but that they still have more options.

Mnuchin and McConnell both spoke at an event at a Chamber of Commerce event in Louisville, KY, where both brought up the debt ceiling.

“What we intend to try to accomplish is comprehensive tax reform that brings the rates down, to make American competitive”, McConnell said. Democratic leaders, waiting for a Republican proposal, have been relatively quiet on how they plan to use this leverage – if at all. “We’ll do that because this is about paying the bills we already racked up, making sure we pay our debts”.

“The President and I, and our teams, have been and continue to be in regular contact about our shared goals”, the statement said, reiterating that the two sides were working on items like tax reform and raising the debt ceiling.

The Mueller bill came up during the Tillis-Trump conversation, according to a source briefed on the call – the latest signal of the president’s impatience with GOP senators’ increasing declarations of independence from his White House.
