Trump budget puts MI arts funding at risk
President Trump’s $1.15 trillion budget proposal would, if approved, would reorders federal priorities by expanding defense funds and eliminating funding for the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
“There is no viable substitute for federal funding that ensures Americans have universal access to public media’s educational and informational programming and services”, Harrison wrote.
The Seattle Symphony received $40,000 past year; Pacific Northwest Ballet was awarded $60,000, which funded a season program.
“They don’t want support anything that’s not pro-Trump and right wing”.
New budget cuts proposed by President Trump could affect local arts programs. The only mention of the endowments or the IMLS is on page 11, entitled Major Agency Budget Highlights.
Regardless of what occurs at the federal level, state support for the arts remains strong, he said.

Last fall the National Endowment for the Arts awarded nearly a million dollars in grants to 34 arts groups across the state, large and small. The agency is “dedicated to supporting excellence in the arts, both new and established; bringing the arts to all Americans; and providing leadership in arts education”. The National Endowment for the Humanities, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and other Great Society-era programs also would be eliminated.
“Every country that has theater and arts has some kind of national program behind it”, said Stahlhuth.
As federal officials, the chairs of the endowments do not lobby or advocate for their programs. The budget of the CPB was $445 million in 2016, and is one of the main sources of funding for PBS and NPR, both offering a wide range of TV and radio programmes on the arts. But as an agency of the executive branch, we answer to the President and the Office of Management and Budget (OMB).
The federal appropriations process does not end here.
