Trump bullies major research university after protests

Yet it’s also true that, on colleges campuses and elsewhere, some “progressive” voices do call for the stifling of speech they don’t approve of.
University police locked down all buildings and responded with tear gas and rubber bullets, according to witness reports.

Similar protests at the University of California at Davis last month also forced the cancellation of speeches by Yiannopoulos and Martin Shkreli, a former pharmaceuticals boss who became a hate figure after jacking up the price of a life-saving drug.
The speech was set to be the “alt-right” provocateur’s kickoff event for a campaign against “sanctuary campuses”, which critics said wouldintimidate undocumented students at the school.
The AP notes that UC Berkeley is the “birthplace of the free-speech movement and has been known for more than a half-century as a bastion of tolerance”: “It was not a proud night for this campus”, school spokesman Dan Mogulof said, later adding, “We are proud of our history and legacy as the home of the free-speech movement”. “I saw these people”.
“We essentially invited Milo Yiannolopous to speak because he brings up taboo and not politically correct topics that we want a discussion of”, he said.
The UC Berkeley police tweeted that the lock down had been lifted shortly before 11 p.m. local time, and announced that classes and business will go on as scheduled Thursday.
Since 2015, Yiannopoulos has traveled to university campuses as part of his “Dangerous Faggot” tour, frequently provoking student protests.
UC Berkeley Chancellor Nicholas Dirks said those who used fireworks, vandalism and other more aggressive tactics were engaged in an “attack on our fundamental values”, including free speech. In the past days, Trump has announced several policies in his personal tweets.

The letter addressed to acting President Chaouki Abdallah states the decision to allow Milo Yiannopoulos, a British controversial right-wing speaker, undermines the university’s goal of creating a safe environment for students to learn.
