Trump calls for ideological screening test for new immigrants
He introduced a new standard following the June massacre at a gay nightclub in Orlando, vowing to “suspend immigration from areas of the world where there is a proven history of terrorism against the United States, Europe or our allies, until we fully understand how to end these threats”.
“In addition to screening out all members or sympathizers of terrorist groups, we must also screen out any who have hostile attitudes towards our country or its principles – or who believe that Sharia law should supplant American law”, he continued.
Speaking in Youngstown, Ohio on Monday (15 August), Trump said he would launch a multi-front “military, cyber and financial” offensive in a bid to defeat IS (Daesh).
In a speech yesterday in Youngstown, Ohio – a crucial election battleground state – the GOP presidential nominee called for halting immigration from “the most unsafe and volatile regions of the world”, as well as ideological tests to weed out those who don’t embrace western values and aren’t willing to assimilate to American culture.
A subdued Trump, delivering what his campaign billed as a major speech on terrorism in Youngstown, Ohio, said immigration would need to be stopped from “some of the most risky and volatile regions of the world that have a history of exporting terrorism”, but did not specify what they were. The time is overdue to develop a new screening test for the threats we face today.
Trump also advocated suspension of immigration from the countries exporting terrorism although he avoided mentioning the term “Muslim-majority nations” the way he had done in the past.
In response, Mahoning County Democratic Party Chairman David Betras said, “He’s a xenophobe, he’s the king of dichotomy and double-talk”. He didn’t get too into specific details in his speech. We assimilate people all the time.
The YSU room can hold up to 750 people, but Trump’s campaign limited the number of invitations to 350. Obama has said that “failing to plan for the day after” the intervention was probably his worse mistake.
“In Egypt, terrorists have gained a foothold in the Sinai desert near the Suez Canal, one of the most essential waterways of the world”. We will work side by side with our friends in the Middle East, including our greatest ally Israel. We can not allow the internet to be used as a recruiting tool and for other purposes by our enemy.
“Nor can we let the hateful ideology of radical Islam – its oppression of women, gays, children and nonbelievers – be allowed to reside or spread within our own [country]”. But just like we couldn’t defeat communism without acknowledging that communism exists or explaining its evils, we can’t defeat radical Islamic terrorism unless we do the same.
“Unlike Hillary Clinton, who has risked so many lives with her careless handling of sensitive information, my Administration will not telegraph exact military plans to the enemy”, Trump said.
“Hillary Clinton lacks the judgment, the temperament and the moral character to lead this nation”.
“Importantly, she also lacks the mental and physical stamina to take on ISIS and all of the many adversaries we face”, he said.
Clinton’s senior policy adviser Jake Sullivan told CNN that Trump’s policy shouldn’t be taken seriously.
And he lambasted Clinton with the same criticism she’s leveled at him in trying to make the case that his are the safest hands to steer the country.
Trump said he believes the United States and Russian Federation could find “common ground” in the fight against the Islamic State. He panned the long, expensive Iraq War started under Republican President George W. Bush, as well as Obama’s calls for new leadership in some Middle East countries during the pro-democracy Arab Spring uprisings.
Trump said one of his first acts as president would be to establish a “commission on radical Islam”, which would include “reformist” Muslims. “It’s never, never, never, ever been a good bet to bet against the United States of America!” he shouted, going on to say, “We never bow”.
His plan included partnerships with other countries, including Muslim ones, in the fight against the so-called Islamic State militant group, but his newest idea is a test for new immigrants, The Washington Post reported.
Trump is expected to say that any country that wants to work with the U.S.to defeat “radical Islamic terrorism” will be a USA ally – though aides did not specify which countries that position refers to.
