Trump campaign manager knocks Cruz over immigration
The two Republicans’ attempts to damage Cruz reflect their campaigns’ understanding that their best bet at a long-shot run depends on a strong finish in Iowa – and that Cruz’s strength in Iowa makes that unlikely. “You don’t want to be running and have that kind of thing over your head”.
Trump told the Post that he was being candid about Cruz, who is gaining on him in recent polls, versus re-starting the “birther” issue that he used against President Barack Obama.
“I do support comprehensive background checks, and to close the gun show loophole, and the online loophole, and what’s called the Charleston loophole, and to prevent people on the no-fly list from getting guns”, said Clinton.
“Despite the happenstance of a birth across the border, there is no question that Senator Cruz has been a citizen from birth and is thus a “natural born citizen” within the meaning of the Constitution”, two former solicitors general, Neal Katyal and Paul Clement, wrote in the Harvard Law Review in March. Trump is once again alleging that his hated foe might not really be an eligible US citizen. The consensus among legal scholars is that Cruz is eligible, because he was born an American thanks to his mother’s US citizenship.
Trump’s remarks – part of a backstage interview before a rally here Monday night – come as Cruz is rising as a serious threat in the presidential campaign, especially in Iowa, where some polls have shown Cruz eclipsing the billionaire mogul. Cruz has long said that because his mother is a citizen by birth, he is one as well and fits under the definition of a natural-born citizen.
John McCain, the Republican presidential candidate in 2008, for instance, was born in the Panama Canal Zone to US parents. “I don’t know. Maybe he doesn’t want that”.
The ad will start airing in New Hampshire on Tuesday, according to the Cruz campaign.
Ted Cruz, immune to irony and impervious to cognitive dissonance, announced during an appearance in Iowa on Monday that he will be even harsher on immigrants than Donald J. Trump, who now holds the coveted title of “The Worst” on the issue. We have our answer – although I assume Trump would say that he’s not questioning Cruz’s qualifications here, he’s merely repeating what others have said to him.
Candidates and super PACs have been releasing a stream of ads since the new year as the first votes in the primary are just weeks away. He was born in Canada. The address was a not-so-subtle dig at congressional rivals such as Rubio who, as Cruz is all too eager to remind people, changed his position on immigration reform.
Trump said it was irrelevant when O’Reilly asked if the ad wasn’t misleading. She first saw Cruz speak in Texas during his 2012 Senate campaign, and this is the first time she’s ever volunteered for any campaign.
So, for Cruz to win Iowa, it’s a question of organization – and faith.
