Trump challenged for suggesting he pressured Ford to return jobs from Mexico
“Ford has not spoken with Mr. Trump, nor have we made any changes to our plans”, a company spokesman said Monday.
On Sunday night, Trump tweeted “word is that Ford Motor” will cancel plans to build a new plant in Mexico.
So what is Trump talking about?
The move saved about 1,000 jobs in Ohio. “Think what can be done as president!” and “Do you think Hillary, Ben or Jeb could do this?”
But that was distinct from the $2.5-billion to be invested in Mexico for the new plants and the possibility of moving production of the Focus and C-Max, which remained a sore point for the labor union. The best course of action for Trump right now would bring back the Nabisco from manufacturing the Oreo in Mexico, which Trump has vowed never to eat again. The blog post itself linked to a CNN story that mentioned Trump’s criticism of the company. He then followed up with, “Do you think I will get credit for keeping Ford in U.S. Who cares, my supporters know the truth”.
But Ford hasn’t changed its plans to build new $2.5 billion facilities in Mexico, according to a company spokeswoman. That’s Ohio Governor John Kasich, who helped pass tax cuts for Ford’s Ohio plant a couple months after the UAW deal. Ford announced the kickoff of that Ohio production on August 12, triggering the CNN Money story.
Trump began toasting himself Sunday for convincing Ford to relocate production of the vehicles from Mexico back to the United States. “Hard work and teamwork brings results for all the people”.
Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has pulled his latest competitor into a war of words after taking credit for Ford’s decision to move a plant from Mexico to Ohio – which critics have pointed out is factually inaccurate.
Kasich is quoted, “Our country needs real leadership and not empty, false rhetoric”.
“As Donald Trump continues to try to falsely take credit for Ford sending jobs back to the United States, the facts are in: it happened under Governor Kasich’s leadership”, the Kasich campaign said in a statement. “We made a decision to move the F-650 and F-750 medium-duty trucks to Ohio Assembly in 2011, long before any candidates announced their intention to run for USA president”, Ford stated.
April 2015: Ford announced it will spend $2.5 billion on two new plants in Mexico that will focus on building fuel-efficient engines and transmissions. But it seems Trump and the blogger he parroted believe – incorrectly – that the Avon Lake trucks are being shifted from a proposed facility in Mexico that Trump has railed against on the stump. “Overall, more than 80 percent of our North American investment annually is in the US, and 97 percent of our North American engineering is conducted in the U.S”.
