Trump chooses Governor Nikki Haley for United Nations ambassador
Those under consideration include 2012 Republican presidential nominee Mr Romney, formerly an outspoken Trump critic, and ex-New York mayor and Trump loyalist Rudy Giuliani.
Nikki Haley was announced as the US Ambassador to the United Nations by the President-elect Donald Trump on Tuesday.
The governor of South Carolina, Nikki Haley was born to Indian-Sikh immigrants.
Reports initially floated Haley’s name as a Secretary of State candidate under Trump’s administration, a position that has gone unfilled as of early Wednesday.
Trump also reportedly offered retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson the position of secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
“The Indian-American community is excited that we now have someone at the cabinet level in the U.S. government for the very first time!” he added.
Throughout the Republican nomination campaign, she vehemently supported Florida Senator Marco Rubio in the SC primary.
Haley also criticized Trump for not releasing his tax returns, prompting the NY real estate mogul to hit back on Twitter, “The people of SC are embarrassed of Nikki Haley!”
“Well, today we’re excited about Gov. Haley and while the focus is on her, you can’t ignore the fact that there will be some changes across the state and we ask that everyone listening to have some patience for that process”.
“The one constant is when things we didn’t understand happened, the action was people stood hand in hand and loved each other”. Haley is the daughter of Indian immigrants, so she also would be his first minority selection after a string of announcements of white men. “The second is a satisfaction with all that we have achieved in our state in the last six years and the knowledge that we are on a very strong footing”.
South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham praised Haley as a good choice and said in a statement that he looks forward to working with her on “overdue reforms of the United Nations”.
Mr Trump called her “weak” on illegal immigration.
But there remain questions about her qualifications in the area of foreign policy. She has not publicly made her views known with regard to how to end the war in Syria.
As for DeVos, her family has been active in Republican politics for decades, especially as donors. Last December, she asked that no Syrian refugees be relocated to SC because of “gaps in available intelligence” on those fleeing the civil war.
“I am honored to work with the president-elect on his vision to make American education great again”, DeVos said. Considering the situation, Haley will have to assure the world that the core values of America still stand true, Pressman added.
Nikki Haley will be the United States ambassador to the UN in Trump’s new cabinet and is the first woman on the team.
