Trump chooses women for Cabinet: Haley for UN, DeVos for Ed
President-elect Donald Trump’s choice for ambassador to the United Nations, South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, has won praise from Israel’s supporters in Washington, Arutz Sheva reported.
Haley, whose birth name is Nimrata Randhawa (her parents sometimes called her “Nikki”, meaning “small one” in Hindi), and Trump consistently expressed mutual dislike during the primary campaign, in which Haley supported Senator Marco Rubio of Florida.
She would also be the first ever Indian-American Cabinet rank official in any administration.
Many political pundits were impressed with Haley and how she handled the confederate flag controversy, the Charleston race shooting, and major flooding in herstate. “I do not envy her in her position”, McAlister expressed.
KELEMEN: Haley says she’ll continue on as governor of SC until she goes through the confirmation process. Haley was the first woman who was tapped by the Donald Trump for the top-level administration post during his transition in the White House.
Haley faces a tough challenge at the United Nations during a time of worldwide uncertainty over Trump’s promises to scale back Washington’s central role in global security.
She told The Associated Press in July, “A lot of the things he has said are very off-putting and concerning”.
The 44-year-old daughter of Indian immigrants, Haley became South Carolina’s first female governor in 2011 and was re-elected in 2014.
Danon vowed that with Haley filling the critical position of US Ambassador to the United Nations, “we at the Israeli mission will continue to work in full partnership with our friends in the American Mission, as we further strengthen the special bond and shared values between Israel and the US”.
Mrs Haley has little foreign policy experience but has made a dozen trips overseas on trade missions for her state, including one to Europe in 2011 when she was criticised for running up expenses of $127,000 for SC taxpayers. The decision has come at a time when Trump aides are looking to diversify the appointments in his administration.
“This month’s elections have brought exciting changes to America”.
The position means she’s responsible for representing the United States’ interests to the world.
Bad blood between Trump and Haley was evident through much of the campaign.
Trump has also said he was “strongly considering” Carson, the retired neurosurgeon, for the HUD slot. But, the New York Times reports that in a CNN interview, Haley revealed that she was merely acting as a governor in her role. Marco Rubio during the SC primary.
The South Carolina measure which Haley signed into law past year doesn’t specify Israel by name but more generally prevents public entities from contracting with businesses engaging in the “boycott of a person or an entity based in or doing business with a jurisdiction with whom South Carolina can enjoy open trade”.
