Trump congratulates Macron in post-election call: White House
Europe faces more tests ahead.
Macron urged the French to embrace rather than reject globalisation.

If opinion polls are right, Macron may actually end up having a parliament largely sympathetic to his agenda at a time when the European economy _ and the French one in particular _ appear to be gaining momentum.
The FN holds just two parliamentary seats now, but is hoping to increase that number to 20 following the presidential election.

The day also marked decades of peace in western Europe, something Macron made a cornerstone of his campaign against Le Pen’s brand of nationalist populism. The 34% that Le Pen won is double the support her father attracted when he campaigned on an ultraright National Front ticket in 2002.
“It’s a fantastic score”.
Her party’s final result, however, marked a historic high for the French far right, and secured her a solid place in her country’s political sphere.

Whatever Le Pen’s defeat means for populism’s long-term future, Macron’s victory can not disguise the fact that France remains a deeply-riven society on a number of issues and those divisions are not going to go away anytime soon. “They want protection. They want borders”, said Mayer.
