Trump Continues Tradition with Speech to Congress
R.J., a health fellow with the UCLA Dream Resource Center through Asian Americans Advancing Justice, said the contradictions in Trump’s speech stood out to him, especially the president’s initial call for unity but subsequent vilification of immigrants and Muslims. Cuts to foreign assistance and environmental budgets were also revealed as Mr Trump kicked off the week speaking to governors.
But in a Fox News interview broadcast earlier on Tuesday, Mr Trump gave himself an overall “A plus” for effort, but added that “in terms of messaging, I would give myself a C or a C plus”. In tonight’s speech Trump devoted more time to the feelings of Harley-Davidson’s executives about other countries’ tax codes than to any exposition on what the USA tax code should look like.
“For those that wondered if Trump meant what he said when he ran, there is a clear answer”, said Newport Beach’s Mike Schroeder, former chairman of the state GOP who cast his ballot for an undisclosed third party presidential candidate.
“As we speak, we are removing gang members, drug dealers and criminals that threaten our communities and prey on our citizens”. “We want all Americans to succeed – but that can’t happen in an environment of lawless chaos”. “We must restore integrity and the rule of law to our borders”. Congressman Joaquin Castro of Texas called Trump’s speech was filled with “dark and divisive themes” that scapegoated the immigrant community.
In a surprise move, the President could also voice his support for immigration legislation, a senior administration official said ahead of the speech. A person with knowledge of the meeting confirmed Trump’s comments on the condition of anonymity in order to reveal the private discussion.
As the speech went on, some people tweeted, wrote posts on Facebook or took notes.
“From repealing and replacing Obamacare to revamping our outdated tax code and keeping our country safe from the threat of radical Islam, we are committed to working with the Trump administration to deliver results”, he said.
And all of that’s before Trump has had the chance to return to Twitter, as he is wont to do, where he’s not reading off a prepared script and can say what he really feels. He focused on issues and promoted a number of favorite Republican proposals, including lower business taxes and health insurance sold across state lines, but also pushed some initiatives that are bound to rile Republicans and businesses.
The president called to “restart the engine of the American economy”, in part by making it “much, much harder for companies to leave”, which implies ruinous protectionism or other government misdirection of investment.
US President Donald Trump’s first policy address to a joint session of Congress brought swift reaction from both sides of the aisle.
“The time for small thinking is over”, Trump said.
“This program will be guided by two principles: Buy American and hire American”, he said.
